A mobile site that stopped losing people before it loaded
Four in five sessions were mobile and the page took almost five seconds to render. The fastest conversion win available was not a test at all.

The challenge
Mobile carried the overwhelming majority of sessions and converted at roughly half the desktop rate. The team had been planning a testing programme, but the mobile product page was taking close to five seconds to reach largest contentful paint on a mid-range device and a real network. A meaningful share of paid traffic was bouncing before the page rendered at all — no experiment would have measured cleanly against that.
What we did
- 01
Established a real-device performance baseline on throttled connections, rather than relying on a lab score from a developer laptop.
- 02
Removed four redundant third-party scripts, deferred a fifth, and replaced a carousel library that alone accounted for a large share of main-thread blocking.
- 03
Rebuilt the product page templates with responsive images, correct priority hints, and no layout shift.
- 04
Only once performance was stable did we start the experimentation programme, so results were attributable to the tests.
The outcome
Mobile conversion improved substantially before a single experiment ran, and the subsequent test programme produced trustworthy numbers because the baseline had stopped moving. Retention work on the post-purchase flow followed in the second quarter.

Rebuilding a product page around what buyers actually asked
